Day 1 Sepilok Forest Edge Resort (D)

Take a Taxi at the Sandakan airport to the Sepilok Forest Edge. Check in to Sepilok Forest Edge. Self-discovery tour to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary (feeding time at 10am & 3pm); Sepilok Sunbear Sanctuary and or Rainforest Discovery Center.

You have the opportunity to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center on your own. The orphaned and / or injured orangutans are being cared for before they are released back to the wild. Sepilok is a rainforest reserve that represents a beautiful showcase to the rest of the rainforest in Borneo. Observe the feeding of orangutans from a platform in the forest. An educational 25-minute video documentation on the Orang Utan will be shown at the center for your viewing. Continue to the Bornean SunBear Conservation Center (BSCC) and visit the rescued sunbears, which are nurtured for before being released to their natural habitat.

Set dinner at Sepilok Forest Edge.

Day 2; Kinabatangan Wetland Resort (B/L/D)

Breakfast at the Sepilok Forest Edge Resort.

10.30am – Pick up at the Resort by the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort Team. Transfer to Sandakan jetty for boat transfer to Abai, which is situated at the lower Kinabatangan River. The 1.5hours cruise shall bypass Berhala Island, the prominent sandstone cliff, which is a historical site during the World War II. The journey also offers likelihood to observe wildlife along the way. This is where the mangrove forest of the coast merges into the more familiar riverine forest of the Kinabatangan River. It is also here where the intrepid American couple, Martin and Osa Johnson, first documented the wildlife and people of the river in the 1920s. Abai borders one of the most important wildlife refuges, the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Check-in at the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort, a newly established resort nestled in the pristine mangrove and fresh water forest, secluded at the edge of the RAMSAR (Wetlands of International Importance) site. Have Lunch while you are briefed about the lodge and the activities.

4.pm – Set off for the afternoon river cruise in search of the mangrove specials, river sceneries, village landscapes and more wildlife. On good weather, we may even get to see firefly colonies, which are found at certain parts of the river. Cruise back to KWR for dinner.

8.30pm – After dinner, take a walk along the boardwalks with your headlamps or torch and look for nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort

Some highlights of bird species in Abai :

Scarlet Minivet, Lesser and Greater Leafbird, Storm Stork, Oriental Darter, Mangrove Blue- flycatcher, Stork Billed and Blue Eared Kingfisher. Buffy Fish-owl, Night Heron, Yellow Bittern, Ruddy Kingfisher, Helmeted hornbill, Pied hornbill, Rhinoceros hornbill, among others.


Day 3; Kinabatangan Wetland Resort (B/L/D)

6.30am - Early morning river cruise to observe more wildlife and birdlife. The cruise will lead to the nearby ox-bow lake, Danau Pitas, to explore the area. Enjoy your packed breakfast while admiring the natural surroundings.

9.00am - Proceed to the local fishing village, Kampung Abai. Interact with the local Orang Sungai (River People) and observe the daily activities in this tiny fishing village. Return to the lodge for rest and lunch.

2.00pm - Explore the surroundings of the resort on your own for in search of plants, insects and birds. Otherwise you can take this time to relax in the tranquility of the lovely resort.

4.30pm - Set off for another adventure as we cruise in search for more wildlife along small tributaries.

6.30pm - return to the lodge, dinner.

8.30pm - After dinner, we set off for a night river cruise along small tributary rivers in search of nocturnal wildlife.


Day 4; Bike and Torus B&B (B/D)

After breakfast, checkout from KWR and board the boat for a 2 hours cruise upper stream to Sukau village. Land Transfer from Sukau Village to Bike and Tours B&B Lahad Datu

3:00pm - Arrive in Lahad Datu and Check In to Bike Bike and Tours B&B Lahad Datu.

Day 5; Danum Valley Field Center (B,L,D)
(about 30km)

After Breakfast transfer from Lahad Datu to Silam Mountain in the morning. Cycle from Silam Mountain to Taliwas. About 30km on sealed and well-maintained gravel road. Stop in Taliwas for a dip at the Taliwas River while Bike and Tours Team prepares lunch for you to enjoy by the riverside.

3:00pm – land transfer from Taliwas to Danum Valley Field Center (DVFC). Arrive at DVFC, check in and free and easy.

7:00pm – Dinner and guided night walk.


Day 6; Danum Valley Field Center (B,L,D)

5:30am An early start to witness the beauty of

the jungle with your guide. Optional: Pre-arrange for a 4X4 drive to Bukit Atur to view the sunrise from a top of a canopy of trees. Do inform your guide in advance if you are interested in this activity –this optional activity is at your own expense.

Return to the center for breakfast and trek to the Tembaling Waterfall or Burial Cave. Enjoy your packed lunch. After trekking you can go to the Segama Beach River for a dip. In the late afternoon go for another trekking session to watch the sunset.

Dinner and Guided night walk.


Day 7; Bike and Tours B&B (B,L,D)
(about 43km)

6.00am – Breakfast. Bid farewell to the rainforest in style. Cycle from DVFC to Taliwas. This is about 43km ride on well-maintained gravel road. The road here would be slightly more challenging with a few uphills compared to the 30km ride to Taliwas a few days ago. Stop at Taliwas for a dip in the river. Land transfer to Lahad Datu for lunch. Overnight in 1 standard double room at Bike and Tours B&B in Lahad Datu.

After breakfast, drive to Lahad Datu Airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu. Recommended flight (MH3015) at 10.55am. Arrival at Kota Kinabalu at 11.50am. Departure to Gaya Island at 14.00. Check-in to your villa is possible at 15:00.
